“Ouch!” is a common exclamation heard across the gym, among other more colorful expressions, when an exerciser sustains an injury during a workout. Often, it is because we have laid the groundwork for injury by failing to give our bodies a good warm up.

If you are like many people who are time-pressed to get in a good workout, you may perform a few “half hearted” stretches, and then go directly into the heart of your intense exercise program. But your body is a demanding machine, and warming up allows it to adjust to the extra metabolic demands of increasing blood flow, heart rate, and the temperature of the muscles. When your body isn’t sufficiently warmed up, your chances of sustaining an injury immediately or soreness the next day increase, which can keep you from exercising altogether!
