Self-esteem is a human condition. Although a topic of so much discussion and material, many continue to struggle with this area of our lives. Here’s how you can develop a well-balanced sense of self-esteem.

The most basic need all of us have is to have a sense of personal worth. This sense of personal worth has two elements: security and significance. Security means being loved and accepted just for who I am, regardless of what I do. This is what Gloria Steinem calls “core” self-esteem, and psychologists refer to as “global” self-esteem, being loved and accepted.

There’s a revolution going on. “It’s a revolution within”, so says author Gloria Steinem. In fact, that is the title of her bestseller, Revolution From Within: A Search for Self-Esteem. In her preface she writes “The more I talked to men as well as women, the more it seemed that inner feelings of incompleteness, emptiness, self-doubt and self-hatred were the same, no matter who experienced them, and even if they were expressed in culturally opposite ways.

Through two spaces: the traditional government itself by getting more women in the councils of elders and community of judges, and in the areas of state organization. We need to build the self-esteem of these women and make them feel valued for their identity, knowledge and culture.

Low self esteem can propel a young person into a range of damaging relationships and poor choices. Using models to understand the roots of low self esteem, this course will help you and your clients to begin to identify their needs and find a healthier way to meet them.

Have you ever felt frightened or intimidated when out walking alone? Have you ever wondered what you should do if approached by an attacker? Have you ever worried about becoming yet another home invasion statistic?

There is a growing trend in companies providing their employees with personal safety training in the workplace as part of their corporate social responsibilty and well-being initiatives for their staff. What a fantastic way for a company to show that it appreciates its staff and cares for their welfare. The course also provides a great opportunity for team building and boosting company morale.

Personal safety begins with awareness and taking responsibility for your safety. It is about knowing what to do before you find yourself in harm’s way or in a threatening situation. The good news is that the majority of attacks on women are preventable.

Most types of self-defense courses for women include sessions dedicated to enacting possible attacks. This is often carried out by having the instructor dress in protective equipment and provoking students to elicit an attack or defense strategy. Though this practice may seem strange or uncomfortable at first, it can be invaluable for gaining a minimal level of experience and getting more accustomed to the idea of self-defense.

As many types of defense strategies involve moderate to hard physical activity, women may wish to take on long-term courses to strengthen their skills while also benefiting from great exercise. Women who are physically fit and who feel sure and balanced on their feet are more likely to successfully deflect an attack, and may even prevent attacks from those concerned about getting hurt.

Safety in Cyberspace. Although the Internet is educational and entertaining, it can also be full of danger if one isn’t careful. When communicating on-line, use a nickname and always keep personal information such as home address and phone number confidential. Instruct family members to do the same. Keep current on security issues, frauds, viruses, etc. b

As a parent in this digital age it’s your job to ensure your children learn safe surfing habits.

One day your child may surf the Net and find web pages designed specifically for kids and teens. The following day he or she may find web sites designed by pornographers, or criminals. The Internet allows anyone in the world to publish almost anything — and there’s no failsafe way to keep our children from viewing all of the offensive material out there. Keep your kids safe when they’re online with the following tips:

The Internet can be a wonderful resource for kids. They can use it to research school reports, communicate with teachers and other kids, and play interactive games. Kids who are old enough to punch in a few letters on the keyboard can literally access the world.

I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents’ permission.

I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.

I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring a parent along.

Hardware firewalls protect your home computer from hacker attacks that use automated bots to search for personal computer vulnerabilities, particularly in computers that are connected by broadband access with a static IP address. Learn more about hardware firewalls from How Stuff Works.

Never to open or accept e-mails, URLs, files, links, or other things from people they don’t know and trust. Viruses are easily passed this way.

Do not to respond to offensive language or communications they may encounter in chat rooms, on web pages or via email.

Never to meet face-to-face with online “friends” alone.

These services and programs are a hassle to override, making them impractical for your general family surfing. That’s why I suggest the above strategy for your family computer and the restricted environment for your child computer.

When I think about self-talk I think of that interesting little voice in our heads we hear after certain situations that helps us evaluate and make sense of what has happened. This self-talk can be positive or negative, and, it can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

For example, I often have people come to me for advice on how they can get a raise or promotion. Those who come to me with a positive attitude that they are worthy of obtaining a higher salary or promotion are much more likely to accomplish their goal because their self-talk is positive and it reinforces that they can figure out a way to make it happen (thus it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy).

Positive affirmation statements are short statements designed to enhance self-image, help you achieve a secure mental attitude and increase confidence. Take, for example, Muhammed Ali’s affirmation “I am the greatest.” Other examples are:

“I am prepared and ready to go.”

“I am relaxed.”

“I believe in my ability to succeed.”

Effective affirmations are clear, realistic, personal, believable and in the present tense. They will also aid you in achieving your goals. Changing your self-talk is going to play an enormous role in increasing your chance for successful performances on a more consistent basis.

On the other end of the spectrum, I see an aspect of this dissatisfaction at the bootcamp that I assist with. At the end of each session, we do reassessments with measurements and weight. I can’t tell you how many times I hear people who have improved their fitness and strength tremendously say “I was hoping that would be lower”. Defining their success by numbers on a scale or tape measure.

Believe: Open your heart and mind to the possibilities and expect to make positive changes in your life using this technique. Break out of the negative self talk pattern and get into the positive self-talk habit.

What are some ways to improve e-mailing habits?

Stop ‘reflex’ e-mailing. Too often, we give in to the almost reflexive urge to respond to e-mail immediately, as if we were talking to someone. This is the texting culture invading the workplace, which is an environment that demands better judgment and discretion.

It is not inconsiderate or unprofessional to deliberate before responding to e-mail. Sometimes just waiting 10 to 15 minutes can make a big difference. Except in those rare instances where an urgent response is called for and cannot be made by phone, people should not fire off immediate responses. Stop and think about what you’re sending and whether you need to send an e-mail at all.

Try using the telephone instead of sending an email: Decide if the topic for discussion should be live or via email. You might think a live discussion will take longer than sending an email, but for many topics, a quick telephone call will actually turn out to take less time and will help you avoid playing “email tag.”

Don’t “copy the world”: Enough with the CYA behavior, stop “copying the world”. I know one manager who had several employees who always copied her on every email they sent. She quit reading them and began pressing “delete” every time she saw she was the “copy” recipient. (Note: If this is happening to you, you also need to deal directly with these employees’ email behavior to counsel them to stop this practice).

Empty your inbox every day and keep it that way. Delete most and file the rest.

Include all of your contact information in your signature—phone, fax, website—so that others don’t have to hunt for this information.

One topic, one subject. Change the subject line when conversation turns to another topic, and break up multiple topics into separate emails for easy filing and recall.

Count to five before clicking “Send.” Make sure your email is clear and represents what you really want to say to avoid a lot of back-and-forth later.

Be prepared.

Regardless of the task or role set before you it is your job as leader to be prepared. That means learning as much as possible about your department, your role in the organization, and the expectations of your superiors.

Once you understand what you are expected to know, you can educate yourself about your department. That doesn’t mean that you will learn every nuance in detail. It does mean that you will gain an overall working knowledge of everything that goes on in your department that will equip you to lead.

Learning to Listen

If a leader is isolated from what is going on around them they’ll have shut themselves down to the flow of vital information about what is going on in the organization. Apart from simply being aware of the day to day operations it is imperative to be able to listen to what is “not” being said i.e. the general mood state of one’s employees and/or peers. The mood state can significantly affect, even undermine the optimism, enthusiasm and morale of the troops. Keeping a finger on the pulse of this subtle but important piece of information will help the great leader to know well in advance when the wind has been taken out of the sails thereby helping them take swift corrective action.

Be Consistent.

Consistency matters. Whether it’s addressing performance issues in a timely manner, setting stretch goals, helping team members achieve success and then recognizing those successes, be consistent with each employee.

Be sure your approach aligns with human-resource policies. This would apply to performance appraisals and benefits such as sick time or vacation time. Regardless of the medium – individual conversations, team meetings or e-mail – consistency in your approach and messaging will help earn your team’s respect.

Be ready for resistance

One of the facts of life is that when you are in leadership, you have to solve problems.

Pastor Lloyd Ogilvie, for many years the senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, California and now Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, once observed that “Everyone has problems; if you don’t have any now, you will have problems; wherever you work or live, you’ll have problems; or you just might be someone else’s problem.”

Sometimes we have the faulty notion that we should be able to go through life problem free–that if we have problems, something is wrong with our life. As leaders, we have to be responsible, no matter how painful it is. Running away is not an option.

Principles of Effective Leadership can be cultivated only by leaders who recognize that a strong and successful organization depends on their courage and ability to develop themselves emotionally first.

Stress is our reaction to any stimulus (physical, mental, or emotional — internal or external), that tends to upset us. When the reactions are inappropriate, they can lead to health problems. The diseases most often connected to a stressful environment are heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.

Women experiencing high levels of stress can experience anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and depression, and may turn to unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, overeating, or drug abuse to help deal with their stress.

Clean Up
First and foremost, get your life organized. Get your clothes off the ground, do your dishes, make your bed, vacuum a little, and wipe down surfaces with a cleaning aid. Clutter can add to being overwhelmed or out of control.

Exercise!
Stress is the body’s reactions to pressures, over commitments, time management, and other things. The body reacts a certain way to situations that feel out of our control and stress is actually how the body makes us feel using hormones and adrenaline. Aerobic exercise is a way to expend that excess energy that the body uses when your get stressed. If you work out to a point of healthy fatigue, you have successfully expended extra energy that could be used to sabotage your day with stress.

Breathe Deeply
Feeling stressed evokes tense, shallow breathing, while calm is associated with relaxed breathing, says Michael Lee, author of Turn Stress into Bliss and founder of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy in Bristol, Vermont. So to turn tension into relaxation, he says, change the way you breathe.

Do something kind for somebody else
It has been shown that committing acts of kindness can increase our level of happiness. Check out the 31 Days of Kindness manifesto to see how you can start showing kindness to others.

Express your thoughts
We all need an outlet to work through our thoughts and feelings. Write, keep a journal, or talk with others about your thoughts and worries to get them off your chest.

Schedule a massage
A little pampering can rub your stress levels the right way. After several weeks of massage therapy, subjects’ cortisol levels decreased by nearly one-third, on average, according to studies at the University of Miami School of Medicine and elsewhere. In addition to keeping cortisol under control, massage sessions reduce stress by promoting production of dopamine and serotonin, the same “feel good” hormones released when we socialize with pals or do something fun.

Cancer prevention is action taken to lower the chance of getting cancer. By preventing cancer, the number of new cases of cancer in a group or population is lowered. Hopefully, this will lower the number of deaths caused by cancer.

Breast cancer prevention starts with healthy habits — such as limiting the amount of alcohol you drink and staying physically active. Understand what you can do to prevent breast cancer.

Protect Yourself

According to the American Cancer Society, “There is no question that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.” Early detection means that the cancer is found when it is smaller. Often it has not yet produced symptoms and is less likely to have spread beyond the breast. Simply put, a three step program of monthly self-exams, a yearly physical and a yearly mammogram for those over 40 can save your life.

Get plenty of physical activity

Being physically active can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (think brisk walking or swimming) or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity (such as running), in addition to strength training exercises at least twice a week. If you’re just starting a physical activity program, start slowly and build intensity gradually.

Ionizing radiation

Based on solid evidence, exposure of the breast to ionizing radiation is associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer, starting 10 years after exposure and persisting lifelong. Risk depends on dose and age at exposure, with the highest risk occurring during puberty.

Share Yourself

If someone you know is fighting breast cancer, there is much you can do. Start by being there for her, every way you can. Offer to go with her to appointments and tests, watch her kids while she’s gone, or cook her family’s dinner that night. Let her know you care about her, but respect her need to be alone sometimes. Be one of the people she doesn’t have to be strong for.

Breast cancer, like any serious illness, is scary. It’s okay to cry, to be afraid, and to be angry. She will need a safe place to do these things. We seem to have convinced ourselves that weakness is a bad thing and that we have to be strong or we’ve given in, or worse, given up. This is not the case. Let her grieve, and help her to move past it in time. We are all human, sometimes the thing we need most is for someone to quietly hold us while we cry.

Not sure where to start? Whether you are looking for a certified pre-owned or a private sale, or are buying from a dealer or neighbor, Consumer Reports can help lead you through the used car buying experience. This guide provides the essential information you need to choose a used car with a good reliability history, sell your old car, and get the best price.

Know the invoice price

Your initial research as you narrowed down your car choices may have given you the invoice price, but if it didn’t (or you didn’t note it), do so before you visit the dealer’s lot. Visit several third-party car information websites and print out the invoice price for the specific cars you’re considering, including model, engine type and size, and options.

While invoice pricing on third-party information websites isn’t 100% accurate, it will give you a good idea of what the dealer paid for the car and it’s the best number to start your negotiation.

Get Ready to Bargain

Your homework is done. It’s all in your report in plain English with an easy-to-follow worksheet. The invoice and sticker price comparisons give you a clear understanding of your negotiating room. You’re ready.

Start Bargaining

Ask the salesperson for the dealership’s lowest markup over their cost. And always bargain with the invoice price, never down from the sticker price. If the car you want is in tight supply, you may have to pay the full sticker price. Otherwise, $300 to $500 over the invoice price is reasonable.

Ask About Rebates and Warranties

When buying a new car, it’s important to know about any factory rebates or warranties that come with the car. When buying a used car, you should ask if the car is sold as is or if it comes with an additional warranty. This way you know exactly what you are paying for and what to expect if the car malfunctions.

Don’t pay for extras you don’t need

Dealers often try to sell you extras such as rustproofing, fabric protection, and paint protectant, or push etching your Vehicle Identification Number on windows to deter thieves.

Don’t accept those unnecessary services and fees. If the items are on the bill of sale, put a line through them. Vehicle bodies are already coated to protect against rust. And CR reliability surveys show that rust is not a major problem with modern cars. You can treat upholstery and apply paint protectant yourself with good off-the-shelf products. You can also do your own VIN etching with a kit that costs about $25.

Negotiating your new car purchase

Now that you’ve determined a fair price, figured out expected trade-in value, and received new car finance rates, it’s time for the negotiations to begin. By this time, the forms you filled out at CarWoo, Cars.com, Edmunds.com, MyRide.com and CarsDirect should have yielded many dealer contacts. The key to getting an accurate picture of the dealer’s offer is to request that they give you the out-the-door cash price excluding rebates, incentives or trade-in’s. The price should include all dealer added fees. At the beginning, don’t let them use your trade-in or financing as part of the negotiation.

Creating and sticking to a personal budget is a vital part of personal financial planning. Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Washington offers an easy, even-step method for arriving at a budget you can live with:

State your financial goals
First you need to decide what your goals are on saving and spending. A financial goal may be setting aside $6,000 annually for retirement. Another goal may be taking family ski trip to Colorado that will cost $5000 for the family. Once you decide on your financial goals, you can start creating an appropriate budget.

List your “fixed” and “variable” monthly expenses
List your “fixed” and “variable” monthly expenses, such as housing, utilities, food and transportation. Remember to allocate funds for clothing, medical care, child care, personal expenses, recreation and emergencies/repairs. Break down your annual, semi-annual and quarterly expenses (taxes, insurance) into a monthly figure that can be put aside and withdrawn when these bills become due. Example: car insurance that is $150 every six months needs $25 per month set aside. You will earn interest on these funds and will have no problems meeting all other expenses in the months these become payable.

Remember not to duplicate expenses that may already be deducted from your paycheck.

Take your budget seriously
Once you’ve got a working budget, treat it like a living, breathing member of your family. Pay attention to it regularly to make sure that it still paints an accurate picture of your lifestyle. Tweak the numbers as necessary. For instance, you may want to budget more toward groceries during the holidays, but find that you can afford to trim entertainment expenses since you’ll be spending more time at home with family. Watch out for upward creeping numbers as well, as these can often indicate that an old habit, like swinging through the drive-thru for breakfast a couple of times per week, may be sneaking back in.

Cut Back, Pay off Debt and Save
Once you’ve figured out what you have in the Leftover category at the end of every month, this is most likely the amount you’ll be able to squeeze pennies to pay off debt and contribute more to your savings. Perhaps start by trimming all your leftover budget by 10% across the board. If you have a $100 dining out budget, you’ve just saved $10 and it’s not that much of a difference. You could probably cut that amount from your grocery budget too and not notice a huge difference.
